The team did not win the playoffs to the Bulls. They lost to the Bulls again the following season, however it was noted that there was an improvement in the plays. The improvement in the performances of the players is causing more attention to the Heats and they are gaining more support as well.
Come 1999, the American Airlines Arena became the new home of the Heat. Over 20,000 Heats ticket holders were accommodated in the new arena. The beginning of the new millennium was a start over for the team. The team was composed of young promising players that gave the team the tenacity to face all. Riley embraced his new role as the team president and stepped down as the head coach in 2003. With the young players at hand, the team was rejuvenated and even the more weathered members had their careers revived.
In 2004, the team acquired Shaq from the Lakers. The combination of Shaq and Wade became something admired in the NBA. They managed to grab a 59-23 winning record which is their second best in franchise history. Riley took in the reigns again as the head coach in 2005.
